LAÏCITE
France is a secular State. The Loi concernant la séparation des Églises et de l'État was enacted in 1905 and has remained in force ever since. The doctrine has been embedded in the French constitution since the end of the second world war. Any French citizen will be wholly familiar with the doctrine but to many people living north of the Channel its extent and effects are largely unknown. Yet it has been observed that to understand France it is necessary to understand laïcité.
The event will be held in Edinburgh on Thursday 3 April 2025 at 6 p.m. Our speaker will be Terry Olson. He is a member of the Conseil d’État and was previously a teacher of law at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (‘Sciences-Po’).
